Want to Improve Your Personality? You Might Want to Quit Smoking.

A new study from the University of Missouri has discovered that smoking triggers the personality traits of neuroticism (being emotionally negative and anxious) and impulsivity (acting without thinking) among adults. Fortunately, the study indicates that smokers who exhibited these traits can improve their personality through smoking cessation. Keep reading to learn more about the study as well as how a marriage therapist in Newport Beach can help if smoking is affecting your relationship.

How Smoking Affects Personality

In comparing smokers with their peers who had quit smoking, researchers found that smokers had much higher levels of impulsivity and neuroticism. The smokers were also much more likely to engage in deleterious, self-harming behaviors. Once they stopped smoking, these traits improved, especially for those aged 18-25.

The researchers explain this improvement, at least in part, as such: people who start smoking tend to be more impulsive, thinking more about immediate gratification without giving a lot of forethought to the negative, long-term consequences of self-harming behaviors. Once the individual has exhibited self-control, tolerance of frustration, and delayed gratification in stopping smoking, these disturbances in personality improve.

This, however, does not appear to explain things in their entirety. Why does neuroticism improve? It would also appear that later in life especially, smoking has much more to do with habit and cravings than impulsivity and neuroticism. The good news, however, is that smoking cessation improves not only physical health but mental health as well.

Kids are always hard and as a parent it's not always easy to see objectively what is really going on. Jennifer helped me talk through challenges/issues with my oldest son that were running through my head. In the end she provided me a solid perspective to build on and because of that I have been able to manage the situation much better. Easy conversation and very helpful.

I have been seeing Jennifer De Francisco for about a year, and she has helped me so much with the unhappiness I thought would never go away. Jennifer’s compassion and empathy made me feel safe enough to open up and talk about the uncomfortable feelings I didn’t even know were causing my sadness. With Jennifer’s help, I am now aware of my negative thoughts. Instead of avoiding them, I can work through them. She has helped change my life.

It was tough when we first started with Jennifer , but through difficult conversations and understanding some of the causes of how closed off we were to each other, we worked through it and are in a good place. The idea that we could break up is the furthest thing from my mind now, and going in to work on our relationship was the best thing to do. One of the things that really helped was that I felt Jennifer really cared that our relationship worked and that we improved things between us. I think that is rare, and always helped me not give up hope.
